MY REVIEW

Good golly, this was a pretty stupid movie. The good thing is, I was expecting that. I only rented this film to further along my own personal goal of seeing 100 new movies in 2008. To do that, you have to be willing to see the bad. This movie is no exception. The story isn't even remotely good. It's beyond any cheesy level I've ever seen. This is the second "comedy" in as many days that I have seen that truly isn't a funny movie in any way. It's almost depressing on how much of a bore it was. Paul Rudd (40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up) who we've recently seen in supporting and cameo roles in a slew of raunchy comedies, gets a shot at a lead role here. He is OK, and because I know the actor can be funny, he was standable. If you've never really seen him before though, you may think he delivers a pretty bland and boring performance with an occasional funny line delivery. Then we have Lake Bell an unfamiliar leading lady face, except to people like me who love the ABC Dramedy Boston Legal and even the NBC failed show Surface. She isn't terrible here, but honestly she isn't good. I loved her on Boston Legal and was sad to see her leave the show, but I guess she just doesn't have that star quality. Finally we have Eva Longoria Parker (TV's Desperate Housewives), who thank goodness has only maybe 15 minutes screentime, despite top billing. In the words of Simon Cowell, she was 'absolutely dreadful' in this film. If I had to watch her anymore, I was going to vomit, and I know that's graphic, but trust me when I say, she was so very bad in this film. Over Her Dead Body never showed any promise of at least being a somewhat entertaining film. It is depressingly bad and incredibly forgettable.

The premise

Three kids hire a low-budget bodyguard to protect them from the playground bully.

MY REVIEW

Wow. What an unfunny movie. I hate to say this, but I think freakin' Meet Dave was more humorous than this below average film. What a lackluster and messy story. What was this trying to be? The teenager friendly prequel to Superbad? You have the fat curly-headed kid, the skinny white kid with wavy hair, and the nerdy white kid sidekick with braces. OK. You know how they say "Oh the preview showed all the funny parts" to movies that when viewed by audiences, aren't that funny? Well, here we had a preview that had pretty much no funny parts, and suprise, a film that had little comedy. OK, I chuckled a few times, mainly at the kids comedic delivery, not Owen Wilson (The Wedding Crashers). Do many of you know that Wilson is actually an Oscar nominated screenwriter? For The Royal Tenenbaums if you were curious. He also co-wrote Rushmore. I've never thought he's been that enjoyable of an actor, I never got his humor, and I don't in this one either. The three kids are more charming and funny that he is. Enough about them though. How about Alex Frost (Elephant)? His high school bully character is creepy and beyond insane. I don't know if it was bad acting (probably) or how the character was written (probably a little of both), but this character needs to be locked in a padded room. How does the principal (played by Stephen Root) just sit by and watch this happen? I mean whatever, it's a movie, this kid, his character and situation provided no humorous moments. He was scary. To think, this same kid, who was attacked by bullies in the brilliant film Elephant, shot up that school on a rampage. Maybe he regretted his desicion to shoot all those kids, and wanted to try being the kid who picked on him. OK now I'm just rambling. Josh Peck (Mean Creek, Nickelodeons Drake & Josh) is almost a cameo even though he's the bullies sidekick. He has maybe 10 lines the whole movie. He played a good bully in Mean Creek, perhaps Alex Frost should have asked a few pointers. To round off the acting, Leslie Mann (Knocked Up, George of the Jungle Hehe) has become quite a known actress. She was horrible in George of the Jungle, but brilliantly hillarious in Knocked Up. Here, her character is just so pointless. She comes in kind of late in the story, pops up a few times as the love interest, eh blah blah. I just didn't understand why she was needed. Stupid story, mediocre acting at best, this was just a dumb movie. Not one of the worst of the year, just....ugh.

The premise:

The mythical world starts a rebellion against humanity in order to rule the Earth, so Hellboy and his team must save the world from the rebellious creatures.

MY REVIEW

Some of you may wonder why such a big hit movie like Hellboy II: The Golden Army is getting a short review from me. Basically I was really tired when I watched this movie, I haven't actually seen the first one, and honestly, I didn't care for it that much. There were a lot of good things about the movie. The fight sequences were awesome and all the action moments were explosive and good fun. Special effects were great. The makeup was good to make all these creatures come to life. These monsters and creatures alike are so bizzare. I compare it to a child molding some weird shape out of clay and putting eyes on it, as to how the created these things. So weird. This is an entertaining movie, but the story is weak in my opinion. Was it just me, or does this Hellboy character spend more time in the movie sulking or making jokes then he does caring about the current threat to humanity at hand? Don't get me wrong, he's funny, I just didn't understand his characters prioritys. Maybe I have to see the first one to get it huh? Until then, this movie is fun but weak at heart. Nothing truly stood out for me personally.

The premise:

MY REVIEW

I'm a bit suprised by this film. Suprised that it wasn't as awful as I was expecting. Don't get me wrong, this is a terrible film. The screenplay is horrendous and the filmaking and special effects are laughable (in a bad way). The acting by most of the cast is amateur and almost offensive. However, there are bright spots that saved this film from a Mikey @ The Movies Award Nomination for Worst Picture. I actually laughed. Not out of uncomfortableness, not out of awkwardness; but because there were some funny moments. Oscar nominee Eddie Murphy (Dreamgirls) was quite hillarious in some scenes. He wasn't good...but he was funny. It's hard to believe that this man got an Oscar nomination (and very deservedly so) a few years ago, and now he's back to doing these movies. They don't even make him money anymore, I just don't get it. The other bright spot was Ed Helms (Andy Bernard on The Office). He's the one who really delivers all the funny dialogue. He stays true to his Office character. That's all she wrote though. It isn't the worst film of the year, nor one of the worst five, but make no mistake, Meet Dave is still an awful, awful film.

The premise:

The project is a drama based on the American Girl doll line and will center on Kit Kittredge, a young woman who grows up in the early years of the Great Depression.

MY REVIEW

The Story and Screenplay: I want to start this off by saying that I hadn't even heard of this movie until last week. Then when I heard about it, my initial thought was: "Oh gosh here we go, another stupid Nancy Drew type little girl movie". Then the unthinkable happened: I saw the film. And even more unthinkable: I loved this film. This movie is one of the best of the year to date. Also to this date, this story, this screenplay is easily one of the best of the year. Ann Peacock's adapted screenplay (Based off the novels of the same name) is wonderful, charming, sweet and packed full of emotion. We have a story of a little girl and her friends and family growing up during the great depression. Simple enough story, but it's actually quite beautiful. This is a rated G film so it's very clean and doesn't show us the truly dark side of the time era. More over, we see it in a lightened sense, but still get the impact it leaves on these characters young and old, and then it resonates to us, the audience. We feel the emotion through the family friendly story, and there are times I felt like crying (but I didn't!). Amongst the overlapping story of the Depression, we have a story of a supposed growing 'hobo' population and everyone suspecting them of robberies that take place. Of course young Kit Kittredge, who is extremely confident and intelligent, tries to figure out the truth behind these events. This story is fun, it's emotional, it's entertaining. I'm starting to learn to suck it up and see more movies like this, what have I been missing?

The Story and Screenplay rating: ***** out of *****

The Performances: Who woulda thunk? Who possibly would have thought that this film would have some of the better and quirkiest performances of this 2008 film year? I certainly wouldn't have. The film is titled Kit Kittredge, but it isn't just about her. We have an array of characters, all so strangely different from eacthother, which gives us so much to enjoy. Starting with Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine, Definitley, Maybe). She certainly is a very talented young actress. I don't know if it was just her character who was the confident one, or if it was the young actress. She plays this title character with such ease and confidence with her head held high, you would think she's been doing this for 20 years. I really hope she doesn't take the course of most young actors, or become annoying like Dakota Fanning, because Breslin is such a charming actress and she's so very good that I think she outshines a lot of actors working today. Yikes. With the supporting cast, and it's a big one, I'll touch on a few. Oscar nominee Joan Cusask (In & Out, Adams Family Values) has always been an odd character actress, and she's no different here. She plays her character with such eccentricty and quirkiness, I'm beginning to think that's her real life persona. However, she has played several subdued characters in her career, so I don't know. Personally, I loved the quirks here, I thought she was really great. Another one is Emmy and Golden Globe winner Stanley Tucci (The Terminal, The Devils Wears Prada). Now he isn't cooky like Cusak (how's that for a sitcom name??) but I've always been a fan. He always delivers such poise and subtleness in his performances that he goes unnoticed. With that though, he is very good in this film. The rest of the cast: Julia Ormond, Chris O'Donnell, Jane Krakowski, Glenne Headly, Zach Mills, Max Thieriot, Willow Smith, and even Colin Mochrie (Whose Line is it Anyway?) all deserve attention, but the cast is so big I don't have time to write about all of them. This is an excellent cast though, all of them are very very good. Yes, even Colin Mochrie is good in this film and he's involved in one of the more touching scenes in the film. Bravo cast!

The Performances rating: ***** out of *****

The Direction and Filmaking: I don't know how much more I can go on about how good this movie truly is, so I'll make this section quick. I love movies that take place in the 20's and 30's era, I wish I could go back in time to visit it. Obviously I can't, and that's why I praise movies like this, becuase when the director and crew do a good job at recreating this time period, it allows me, and audiences to immense ourselves in this life style. The art direction, the costuming and makeup, are all top notch here. Beautiful camera work, etc. This is a just a solid, well crafted film.
