There's evil afoot in the camp of NBC's "Community"...a show I've mentioned more than a few times on my blog. It's one of my favorite shows on TV right now and it's teetering on the edge of cancellation. There is a bright spot though: The show's ratings have been very steady since it's return a few weeks back. More than few people are now predicting good news for the show, they believe they show wil get renewed for a fourth season. Right now, the show is in the middle of a two part episode. Last week Troy and Abed were in a battle to create the largest pillow fort and/or blanket fort. Both have competing ideas and are pitted against each other by the evil John Goodman. I absolutely love when Community does these epic episodes that spoof films. In this case...the war film genre.
Well the episodes are quite fitting for what is going on behind scenes right now...or at least what they are wanting us to believe is going on behind scenes. Because while Troy and Abed battle for the biggest and badest fort at Greendale, another battle is going on behind the cameras. There has been a well documented feud between show supporting star Chevy Chase, who plays the groups antagonist, Pierce Hawthorne and show creater and sometimes writer, Dan Harmon. It's been reported over the years that Chase is a very difficult person to work with and he can be a major asshole on set. Honestly, it doesn't surpise me. They say his Pierce character is very similar to him in real life.
At any rate, apparently the two have butted heads since the beginning of the series, but it's finally come to publicized blows these past few days. It started when Harmon wrote a scene for the finale of the season that was meant for Chase to act in. He said this scene in particular was special to him (Harmon) and that even Chase couldn't "f--k" it up. Well there was some major creative differences on this scene between Harmon and Chase and Chevy stormed off the set and apparently did not film this important scene for the finale. At a recent wrap party for the show, Dan Harmon ripped Chevy a new one in front of his wife and daughter. It was what is being described as a "f--k you" speech. He tried to encourage the crew to chant "F--K YOU!" to Chevy Chase. Which honestly was probably pretty childish and uncalled for.
Then yesterday it was revealed that Chevy Chase left a few very nasty voice mails on Dan Harmons phone. Saying it was "f--ked up to speak that way in front of my wife and daughter." Then went on to say things like "You're an asshole, alcoholic fat shit!" and he also invited Harmon to "suck my c--k.". He also accused Harmon of not providing a script to work off of, and that he was barely a writer and a terrible one at that. Adding to that, in a recent interview with Chevy Chase in the Huffington Post, he revealed he's always had creative issues with the show and said it's never been his type of humor. He stated in the report that he doesn't see himself going much farther in the show.
There have rumblings that he may in fact be leaving the show, should it get renewed for a fourth season. Now with all this going on, I can't see him being asked to come back next season. The cast and crew have joked over the three seasons that it's really hard working with him. I guess he never remembers his lines and they have to provide cue cards for him. To be honest...off all the main characters on the show, Pierce is my least favorite. The first season, he was definitely funny. But since then, he's just become a total asshole. He's not even fun to watch. I know that's the writers fault, mainly. But he's just not a good antagonist to watch each week. I just flat out hate him most of the time. So if he left, it's my opinion that it wouldn't leave that much of a void. You can easily replace his character with some other old senile old man. Maybe bring in someone like Dan Akroyd (wouldn't happen...they are close friends) or Martin Short who would be more tolerable. Or hell, give the Leonard character a shot to join the study group.
Part of me believes this whole thing is a big ruse to boost the ratings for the show. I mean, it's been struggling...so why not pull off some crazy stunt? But the fact that both Harmon and Chase are insane...I don't think that's the case. But who knows. I guess we will find out on Thursday if he show has a spike of viewers or not. At any rate, that's the happs on the Community Feud. I'm hoping this doesn't tarnish the image of the show.
Tune in Thursday at 8pm on NBC for an all new episode!
