"The Mummy": New "Victim" of the Reboot!

Well I have stated my distaste in Hollywood rebooting/remaking/rehashing films we have already seen. So I won't go on a rant about this again. I just wanted to let you all know, whoever you all even are, that another reboot has rose from the ashes! These are ashes are still pretty fresh too. Universal Pictures has announced they are rebooting the successful "The Mummy" franchise. The studio has already hired Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts to write the new saga. The intention here is to go back to the dark roots of the story and bring us story on a scale we have never seen before with the long history of the Mummy films.

The Mummy was first released to audiences back in 1932 starring Boris Karloff and then four sequels followed: The Mummy's Hand, The Mummy's Tomb, The Mummy's Ghost, and The Mummy's Curse. In 1955 a spoof of the Mummy films was released by the name of Abbot and Costello Meet the Mummy. We didnt' see any more Mummy related films until 1999 when the big budget reboot was done by Universal starring Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz and directed by Stephen Sommers. In 2001 we got the sequel The Mummy Returns than 7 years later in 2008 we got the third film The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The character of The Scorpion King was introduced in the second film and then it was spun off into it's own film, The Scorpion King starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. It was not as profitable as The Mummy series, and so it's sequels were in straight to DVD form. Earlier this year The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption was released. There is even a ride at Universal Studios based off the films. It's a pretty funny roller coaster that goes full speed forwards, then goes all the backwards at full speed. It's quick, but it's good thrill ride!

The film is obviously in preliminary stages right now and no official release date has been given. There are also no stars attached but I don't imagine Frasier or Weisz will be back. But you can bet it will once again be a very profitable film for Universal as the 1999 version was very successful. It sounds like they wanna go the route of Batman Begins/The Dark Knight with this reboot by making it dark and dive deeper into the legend of the story. So we shall see. I will not complain about the idea of the reboot...I'm over it now, and this is just what we have to expect at our theaters from this point on. So I will go see this new Mummy movie. I'll be a good boy and give it a shot.
