Well last night the second season finale of The Walking Dead aired. Now we have to wait until around October of this year for the third season to begin. Which is just WAY to damn long, but oh well. The finale was a spectacular feat in television history. It was hands down the most action packed episode of the entire season. The first half of the episode was just brutal, full of zombies being mowed down.
The episode starts right after the Rick killing Shane event and Carl shooting zombie Shane. Then a massive, and I mean MASSIVE herd of zombies come walking their way right towards the Hershel farm and all hell is about to break loose. So we just get scene after scene of our band of survivors fighting for their lives blowing the heads off zombies, burning them to the ground, slicing their heads off, etc. Big time film makers can take several queues from this episode. Because in my opinion, that is how your craft some INTENSE moments of action and peril. That was the definition of how action should be done.
The second half focuses again back on the people, who are now on the run for a new place to hide and call home. Poor Andrea got separated from the group and was being stalked through the woods by a horde of zombies. She was ultimately saved by a mysterious cloaked stranger who was dragging along two zombies, who looked like slaves. This mysterious person sliced other zombies out of the way with some crazy sword. Apparently her name is Michonne, and was a beloved character in the comics and will be featured prominently in season 3. Rick also confesses that he was forced to kill Shane but Lori seemed to be very pissed off at him over this. This annoyed me. I know she had a love affair with Shane and she cared about him, even though he went nutso this season. But he lured her husband, the father of her children, to the woods for the purpose of murdering him. Rick did all he could to save Shane and give him and out, but he HAD to kill him. She has a right to be upset by his death, but no right, in my opinion, to be pissed at Rick for doing what he did.
The rest of the group seemed to turn on Rick as well. He revealed to them something a lot of fans already knew or picked up on: everyone is infected with the zombie virus thing. So if you die by gun shot or natural causes, you can turn. He's been holding this fact secret since the season finale last year. He wasn't even sure if it was true until he saw Shane turn. Most of the group got all bent out of shape saying he's dangerous for not telling them that info. But what would knowing that information change? Nothing. As long as they are alive, they won't turn. Nothing was different. I agree with Rick on this one too. But all eyes turned towards him after the dust settled down and no one was very happy with him. So he kind of snapped. Saying things like "You want to leave, then go!" and "I have protected you people!". In a way, he kind of turned into Shane in that brief moment. It was kind of scary but also kind of cool to finally see him break. That group owes him their lives, and they have no right to be that angry towards him.
The episode ends with his tirade towards the group. As the camera pans up, a large building is revealed in the background that the group is oblivious to. It seems to be a prison, which is a prominent location in the comics. So we essentially got a glimpse of where season 3 will take us. I for one am super excited already! This season only got better from an already amazing first season. It was the absolute perfect balance of zombie and human story. We learned from this season that humans can be far more dangerous then their zombie enemies and life from here on out is going to be more rough then they ever thought.
The Walking Dead is a phenomenal television experience, unlike anything ever put on the small screen before. It's one of those shows that puts big budget movies to shame in terms of overall quality. I cannot wait for October to come around!!!
