Monday TV Recap: Return of "Eureka"!

Well it's very bittersweet for fans of SyFy's "Eureka" as the final season premiered last night. The show was cancelled many months ago, but thankfully the cast and crew got just enough heads up to film a series finale that would satisfy fans. Not all shows are so lucky, so I look forward to seeing how they wrap up this quirky little comedy. Eureka is one of the most bizarre shows you will ever see on TV, but I mean that in the best of ways. I have loved watching every moment of this show and all it's odd ball-ness. I'm going to very sad to see Sheriff Jack and the rest of the crazy group of science geeks fade off into the sunset, but in the mean time I will enjoy every last remaining episode I can get!

Last season ended with a cliffhanger. The Titan crew was about to take off when some outside source began to control the ship and control room. Allison was on board as well, but not as a member of the crew. The ship mysteriously vanished with the faster than light technology (FTL) and they were gone! When we came back last night we are aboard the ship and chaos has ensued. Allison, who was not supposed to be on board comes to and wakes up the crew who were in hyper sleep (or whatever you call it) and they have to quickly land the ship as it's in danger of crashing. When they finally land they assume they are on Titan only to realize something is different. Suddenly they are approached by men in black SUV's and the head honcho comes out to reveal its....ANDY! He appears to be in charge, when we last left, he was Sheriff Jacks Deputy.

The crew is put into chambers and held almost as prisoners. They are all confused and want to know what happened in the hour or so they felt like they were gone. Well Jack comes and finds Allison and reveals a bombshell. The crew has been gone for four years! To them it seemed like minutes. Andy (who is a robot by the way) is the head of GD (Global Dynamics) security and Sheriff Carters smart house is now the head of GD. S.A.R.A.H is her name and she's not a person or an artificial robot. She's a computer system. Andy has turned into a scary, controlling bad boy who brainwashes the townsfolk who defy him into being happy campers. Henry is on to him and he holes up in bunker below his shop like a paranoid conspiracy theorist. Except...he has valid reasons. On another note...a lot else has changed. In the four year absence, Sheriff Jack has fallen in love with....JOE! Joe is a woman by the way. She has been Carters deputy for years. Apparently in the wake of Allison's 4 year absence, as well as Zanes absence (Joe's on again off again boyfriend who was also on the mission) they found comfort from each other.

In typical "Eureka" fashion, the core group (Carter, Allison, Joe, Fargo, Henry, Zane, Holly and Grace) doing their smart guy stuff and disable S.A.R.A.H. and reverse the brainwashing onto Andy and shuts him and all his clone goons down. The day is saved! Fargo is reinstated back to head of GD and Joe is head of GD security. So all is well at GD once everyone gets their brainwashing reversed. Only sad part is that Allison is distraught over Carter and Joe being in love. Not to mention her little girl is 5 or so now and her son is off in college. Poor Allison has had to deal with two drastic alternate time line changes in her life and has caused her to miss a lot. Or has it?

Because the episode ends with a big cliffhanger! The last shot of the episode shows that diabolical Beverly Harlow and her team standing over a large device of sorts with what I believe is every core resident of Eureka strapped in. It is some sort of virtual reality device. So essentially, everything we just watched unfold didn't actually happen. It wasn't four years in the future. Once again, Beverly is up to something nasty! From what I hear, this little storyline lasts about 3 episodes and doesn't take up the whole season.

I really loved the premiere! It seemed much darker than the show has ever been previously. I think last night set up a really cool storyline that I'm excited to see how it all pans out. I'm personally glad that the whole fours years in the future thing wasn't actually true though. I felt really bad for Allison in this story, and was really not a fan of Carter and Joe together. To me, they are more like brother and sister, not a romantic item. It was just to weird to see them kissing. Joe and Zane need to be together. That's just how it has to end. I really don't think the writers of the show will want to disappoint their fans like that. Because everyone wants Carter and Allison to end up together at the end of all this...it just has to happen. At any rate, quality wise, they did not skip a beat. The show just gets more and more creative as each season passes. It's unfortunate SyFy had to cancel such a great show. It had it's best ratings ever last season, so them cancelling it makes no sense. Good ratings, good reviews...should not equate to cancellation...but who am I to judge? I just really hope they give the townsfolk of Eureka a solid send off. They all deserve to have their happy ending.
