STRAIGHT-TO-DVD SPOTLIGHT: Storm Warning

DVD Release Date: February 5th

Holy smokes! This quickly became an almost unbearable film to watch. Storm Warning is just another movie that falls into the new film genre: torture porn. Yes, that is what we call these kinds of movies now, because people get off on them. Not sexually, at least I hope not, but some filmgoers get some kind of sick joy out of these movies. Watching people get physically, mentally, and sexually abused and tortured by a group of sadistic humans who don't know how to clean themselves.

Storm Warning, for the first 50 minutes or so, is actually kind of an entertaining movie. Because up until that point, there is actually very minimal to no blood or gore whatsoever. These canoers get stranded, find this house that turns out to be home to 3 australlian rednecks who get a kick out of torturing innocent wanderers. That first 50 mintutes is almost tense enough to keep you interested, and I was actually in to the film. I mean, the leading lady was pretty bad performance wise, but you have to look past that in a movie like this.

The last act of the movie was a little to much for me. I almost couldn't watch anymore. It got real gory, REAL fast. One man gets killed by having a numerous assortment of fish hooks jabbed in his face and hung from them. He then gets beaten to death by hammer, to which we see a few shots of his eyes slipping out of their sockets. In another scene, a man tries to rape a woman and...well, I actually don't want to tell you what happens to him because I may actually vomit while writing this review.

To sum it up, Storm Warning is an entertaining enough film that oddly gets ruined by blood and gore. The film just became another really crappy Hills Have Eyes sequel or something to the sorts. One day I want to see a movie like this that uses not one drop of blood. You can make a really good psycological torture film in this genre but...young American audiences don't want to see a film with mind games and a cat and mouse kind of story. They want blood. They want guts. They want nudity. They want death. And they want lots of it. Sad.
