TV Spotlight: SYFY's 'Eureka'

EUREKA
Monday Nights on SyFy

'Eureka' debuted on the Sci-Fi (now SyFy) network in 2006 and will be airing it's 5th and final season starting April 16th. I just discovered the show about a year and half ago after my parents told me about it, and I saw that the first 40 some odd episodes were available on the Netflix Instant Queue. It only took me one episode to fall in love with 'Eureka'.

The show centers around a small town, called Eureka, where the best minds in the US are tucked away in this remote town where they build futuristic inventions for the government's benefit. The whole town is full of the smartest people in the world and every building has some kind of crazy gadget or gizmo. Well each episode typically focuses on one of their new inventions going haywire and wreaking havoc upon the town and it's inhabitants. So all these intelligent human beings are now forced into solving the problem before the whole town is sucked into a black hole, or robots go all ape shit on everyone, or whatever the case may be. Eureka is a comedy plain and simple.

The main protagonist is Sheriff Jack Carter (why are so many heroic characters on TV named Jack?), who originally stumbled upon the town of Eureka by accident with his daughter Zoe. He was a big time law enforcement back in the "real world" until he found himself becoming sherriff of this oddball town. He was reluctant at first, but now he's happy to call the quirky town of Eureka home. The best part about it, is that Jack is no where near being on the same page as the wiz kid scientists who work at Global Dynamics (the hub of the town). Nor is his deputy, Jo Luppo. So it's always a treat when the guys at GD are trying to explain things to them and they look like deer caught in headlights. Yet it seems to be the dimwitted pair who tend to solve all the issues using common sense and pure insanity.

Eureka is not a show that breaks down barriers or stands out amongst a crowd of shows like "Breaking Bad", "Mad Men" or any other hugely popular show on TV right now. But it does have a small cult following and it stands it's ground well. It's a very light hearted comedy so you won't get any kind of network TV risque humor. Not many sex related jokes. The humor here derives from the Sheriff and his inability to fathom how and why these things are always happening. It's funny because he isn't Sherriff-ing criminals, he's just there to stop scientific catastrophic failures. If you want quirky, off the wall comedy, then Eureka will be the show for you. I just love the goofball nature of the who and how seriously your not supposed to take it. It's fun and every person is just so lovable.

The show was supposed to go on for 6 seasons by SyFy decided to cancel the show about 5 or 6 months ago. But they are letting the show have one last season, and they gave them plenty of heads up so that they could end the show the way they want to. Last time we saw, part of the cast was launched into space under some unknown sources control, so it left with a bit of a cliffhanger. Not to mention the the show is in an alternate timeline right now. It has been for the past season and a half or so. I just can't stress enough how fun 'Eurkea' is and I'm going to be very sad when it all ends. This is one of those pleasant surprises that can just put a smile on your face. It's pure entertainment and you will have a blast watching this show. I suggest to anyone interested, catch up on the show! Once you start watching it, it becomes kind of addicting. I promise!

Stay tuned for the final hurrah of the little town of Eureka.
